Vanderbilt Estate

Hyde Park, NY

When Frederick and Louise Vanderbilt bought the Hyde Park estate in 1895, they enlarged the extant building to it's current size with help from architects McKim, Mead + White. Celebrated as a "remarkably complete example of a guilded-age country place," this estate eventually grew to include what was known as the Sexton Tract, including a gardeners cottage, a boat house, a creamery, the Sexton barn, and an orchard. The latter part of the estate was eventually sold privately, and the initial part of the property became a National Historic Site in 1940.
